What a wonderful, fresh idea! More than just another book about travel and sights to see, this book allows you to experience the presence of God while traveling throughout His creation. Informative - Interesting - Inspiring. We are already stocking up for birthday and Christmas gifts for friends and family. Hopefully, there will be more books like this one covering many more travel locations.
This book will take you to places beyond the monuments, ancient history, and a beauty of Italy. It tells the story behind the story in a friendly, easy to understand way. I'm a big fan of history and a big fan of the Bible. Nothing I've ever read puts the two together quite like this book. And then there's the life application section in each chapter that helps tune your personal spiritual life to the place you are visiting. This book is a must for any Christian going to Italy, and the perfect gift for any friend going there.
First of all, the look and feel of this journal is beautiful. The design is high-quality, both interior and exterior. For those reasons alone, this travel journal would make an excellent gift for anyone traveling to (or even dreaming of traveling to) Italy. Furthermore, once you dig into its pages, it absolutely does not disappoint! I have traveled to Italy several times, and I only wish I had had this book with me during those trips. I will definitely pack this for my next one! The journal covers the top sites for both Florence and Rome, and the history that Mario Mammina presents for each site is engaging and easy to read. Instead of bogging us down with boring history lessons, Mr. Mammina brings each site to life by describing the struggles and defeats, joys and triumphs of the people behind each landmark. But my favorite part is the "action points" section (at the end of each site) which really allows you to take what you're learning and internalize it, reflecting on the things God may be teaching you through your travels. How can you not leave your trip transformed? From my past experiences traveling, I would think this travel journal would take your thought process on a site from, "Wow, that's a cool site," to "Man, I can totally relate to the defeat and brokenness that led Brunelleschi to achieve his great masterpiece!" Each section has a place to glue ticket stubs or other small mementos. The journal section in the back lets you narrate those thoughts and events of your trip you never want to forget. No matter what I bought to bring home from Italy, THIS journal would be my favorite souvenir because I could re-read my thoughts on its pages and re-live the memories of my trip. Now, I can't wait to go back so I can use it! I hope Mr. Mammina writes more of these for other locations!
Mammina's book goes beyond a travel guide (though his thoughtful reflections and historical knowledge make it very clear he is an expert in travel). His book goes beyond a journal (though his valued reflection questions and desire for internal searching make it clear he is a man a great depth). This book is a beautiful blend of understanding the significance of history in light of today's spiritual journey with Jesus Christ. Suited for a wide range of audiences, his book gives enough depth for great learning, enough application for true transformation, and enough space to capture the experience of both the travel and the times of meeting with Jesus on the journey.
My only hope is that the next books are coming soon. If they are on par with this one, I have a new series I'm going to be collecting for travel!
Mario Mammina has taken two subjects, vacations and spirituality, and put them together in a unique travel experience. The history behind great cities and great people is fascinating, but how often do we take the time to put a theological spin on our vacations? Mario uses history to ask questions that deepen our faith while we stand in the most beautiful and famous spots in Italy. This guide has got me penning my itinerary and packing my suitcase.
